As We May Think - The Atlantic

“Thus science may implement the ways in which man produces, stores, and consults the record
of the race” (Bush 8). After reading this article as a whole, I feel like Bush is depicting aspects of
a phone! Part encyclopedia, instant camera, library, etc., it does everything that the writer wrote
about and more.
“The world has arrived at an age of cheap complex devices of great reliability; and something is
bound to come of it” (Bush 1). To think of the previous sentence in the context of today’s society,
I think automatically of the items we carry around everyday: phones. They are for the most part
affordable, and the advantages that they have are never-ending. I also thought about phones with
this sentence: “Often it would be advantageous to be able to snap the camera and to look at the
picture immediately” (Bush 2). This is especially true since the quality of the pictures taken by
phones continuously gets better with every new release. Not only can we take multiple photos
instantly and delete them without wasting resources, but we can also compress and save them
for future reference without taking up physical space. Reflecting on how advanced our phones
are right now, it is exciting to think how much progress will be made in five or ten years from
now. Also taking it to another level is the fact that most smartphones are touchscreen. With this,
we are able to combine pretty much every sense (except smell) when we are using our phones,
which Bush at times throughout the article wondered would be possible with a single device.

Additional thought:
I would never associate specialization with “being bogged down,” so it was surprising to learn
that as advancements are made, they can sometimes being overwhelming (Bush 1). As I continued
reading, I understood the reason why this occurs; there are sometimes too few people who have
the education and experience to peer review a paper or body of work (like in Mendel’s case with
his concept of genetics) and by the time they do have time, significant advancements may have
already been made.
